Insegnamento Religione Cattolica
Teaching of Catholic Religion (I.R.C.)
On November 26th, 2012, the then Minister of Education, Profumo, signed the legal text "National Guidelines for the Curriculum of Early Childhood and First Cycle Education" (commonly referred to by professionals as Indicazioni 2012). The document states:
"The student is placed at the centre of the educational action in all its aspects: cognitive, emotional, relational, physical, aesthetic, ethical, spiritual, and religious."
For the first time, the teaching of the Catholic religion is explicitly acknowledged as part of the school curriculum, recognizing it as a cultural subject.
To emphasize this aspect, the "Agreement for the Revision of the Concordat", ratified by Law 121, states:
"The Italian Republic, recognizing the value of religious culture and considering that the principles of Catholicism are part of the cultural heritage of the Italian people, will continue to ensure, within the framework of the school’s objectives, the teaching of the Catholic religion in public schools of every type and level, except universities."
Participating in I.R.C. means acquiring the cultural concepts of the community in which one lives. Therefore, our school offers no "alternative activities", just as no activities would be offered if a student chose not to participate in laboratory or project-based activities.
The Three Components of Religious Education are:
- 1Religiosity: Questions of meaning and the universal need for significance
- Spirituality: The heartfelt adherence of each child to the beliefs of their ancestors
- I.R.C.: The knowledge of Catholic culture. This aspect is overseen by the State, which has established the teaching of the Catholic religion.
All children come to our school with personal stories that must be understood, safeguarded, and cared for.
At the age of two (“spring” class), they begin to grasp the fundamental traits of their cultural heritage. Between three and six years old, children start asking deep and unexpected questions about the meaning of life. This is when systems of meaning emerge, including religious ones.
As for prayer and acts of worship (spiritual aspects), the school needs to engage with families. However, the guiding principle remains that in a Christian-inspired school, no one should be obligated, nor should anyone be hindered—for example, from praying as their parents do. In our school, there are “places of spirituality” where each child can express themselves according to what their family imparts.
We wish to emphasize that we nurture in children the feelings of wonder, amazement, gratitude, and thankfulness. In other words, we don’t teach children prayers but rather teach them to pray.
We are committed to the integral development of each child, which is why we consciously, carefully, and transparently take responsibility for the three aspects mentioned above: religiosity, spirituality, and I.R.C.
